Distribution and habitat: Throughout India.
Botany: A tomentose shrub 1.5-3 m high, in many respects very similar to S. violaceum, but usually taller and more erect with fewer more erect branches.
- Leaves : Without prickles or with one only beneath near the base of midrib. Cymes often bifurcate and denser .
- Flowers : Always white. Calyx never armed.
- Fruits: 1.3 cm seated on the calyx which is 9-10 mm diameter with lanceolate lobes.
Chemical constituents: Fruits and leaves contain solasonine, solasodine, jurubine, jurubidine, torvonin, torvogenin, chlorogenin, paniculogenin, sisalogenone, neosolaspigenin and solaspigenin.
Uses: Fruits are said to be good for enlargement of the spleen
