Distribution and habitat: Throughout India. Prefer shady and humid conditions.
Botany: Small hairy annual/perennial herb, slow growing, branches numerous, wiry, often prostrate
- Leaves: Alternate, simple, petiolate, elliptic-oblong or oblong-ovate, leaf blade 0.4-2.5 cm x 1.25 cm
- Flowers: Light blue, solitary or sometimes in pairs, axillary, jointed near the middle of the peduncle where two small opposite lanceolate bracteoles are present
- Fruits: Globose 4-valved drooping capsules.
Properties: General tonic, brain stimulant, febrifuge, anthelminthic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, and antifungal.
Chemical constituents: Amino acids, β-sitosterol, carbohydrates, pantatriacontane, phenolic compounds, phenols triacontane.
Uses: Fever, nervous debility, cure dysentery and stomach ache, applied on wounds. It is used as a blood purifier.
Agrotechnology:
Propagation: cuttings, seeds. Seeds require hot water treatment for germination.
Harvest: Complete life cycle in 4 months and the plant is harvested.
