Distribution and Habitat: Through out India
Botany: A succulent perennial glabrous herb up to 1.2m in height with obtusely 4-angled stem, younger parts reddish speckled with white.
- Leaves: Opposite, decussate, the lower usually simple, the upper usually 3-7 foliate, long petioled, petioles united by a ridge round the stem, crenatures at the extremities of the lateral nerves furnished with rooting vegetative buds.
- Flowers: Reddish purple, pendent, in large spreading panicles.
- Fruits: Membranous follicles enclosed in the persistent papery calyx and corolla, seeds smooth, ellipsoid.
Chemical constituents: steroids, flavonoids, terpenoids, fatty acid, bufadienolides etc
Properties: antimicrobial, anti-ulcer, antihypertensive, antileishmanial, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and immunomodulatory effects
Uses: It is used in haemorrhoids, discolouration of the skin, scalds and acute inflammations, urinary disorders, small pox, fever
